The Pinnacles are high on every visitor’s list to Western Australia and a popular destination for those within. Postcard photos give the impression the landscape is only as big as that framed in the photo, but the expanse truly has the capacity to amaze. If seen at dawn or early evening, a shadowy ochre pall is cast upon these natural tombstones. Keen photographers with their flasks, tripods, proper cameras, and camp chairs prepare themselves for an unhurried and unspoken appointment with nature.

We went twice on successive days. On the first, we enjoyed the place at sunset. We returned the next day to experience it in the starker light of day, which also gave us the opportunity to call in at the visitor’s centre.

That night, half a world away, Ash Barty was winning at Wimbledon. We were cheering her on in our holiday villa, and it was a superb end to the day.
