In the seventies, Matchbox’s Superfast castings fell victim to the desire for fat wheels. A shame. If such wheels were scaled up to life-size, they would be an imperial foot wide. Just silly, really. A prime example is shown here. This seventies casting on the right has the wheel arches placed well above the swage line at hip height. Despite having one of these since childhood, I never noticed until I compared it with the new-release silver car, which gets those details right.

The new release’s casting details are a little vague in some other areas, but overall, it’s a nice shape and effort. And I had to have it – my plum-hued childhood car went missing during one of our home opens.
